Top 9 Unused Items In Your Home

There are so many things in our home that we just don't use anymore. It could be because those things are old, broken, out-of-date, or maybe we just forgot about them!

Here are nine things that are unused in many homes, and are easy to identify and purge without too much effort!

9. Old Remote Controls

It's not just tv's that have remotes; computers, games, fans...if it's electronic, chances are it has a remote! It's good to have an extra remote just in case, but if you no longer have the tv or product that it goes to, it's time to get rid of it!

8. Board Games

If you have a lot of board games in your home, you may want to reevaluate if you are still using them. Take some time to go through them and make sure they have all their pieces. Repair damaged boxes, or transfer them to another container. Games that are for young children will be unused as your children grow older, and these are perfect to give to other famililies that have youngsters at home.

7. Pens

I don't know about you, but we have SO MANY PENS in our house! Before you get rid of them, make sure they work. Then pick out the ones you want to keep, and donate the rest to a local school.

6. Bags

The problem with bags is that there are so many kinds! And they were all useful at one time! When sorting through your bags, go through one category at a time to make it easier. A designer handbag is not the same as a beach bag, luggage, or a grocery bag; so you will be using different qualifications to decide what you keep.

5. Shoes

Just like bags, there are just so many kinds of footwear. Different types are used for work or dress up, beach, sports, winter or summer. Anything that hurts your feet or doesn't fit, you don't need it! If you have a favorite pair that is in poor condition, you don't need to throw them away; take them to a shoe repair shop to have new soles put on.

4. CDs and DVDs

And cassette tapes, and vhs tapes, even old video games! As technology has advanced, so many things have become obsolete. Even mp3 players and ipods are no longer used. Make a note of your favorite mix tapes, and then create a playlist so you can still listen to it.

3. Books

This is a tough one for me, I love to read. I grew up in a house full of books, and its hard for me to get rid of them. Over the years, I have slowly pared down my collection by donating them to local libraries and charities. Many neighborhoods have "book boxes". If you are traveling and you finish a book, consider leaving it in your hotel room for the next guest or the staff.

2. Chargers and Cables

This is another category that keeps growing as technology changes. A simple rule of thumb is that if you don't know what it goes to , get rid of it. It's nice to have a few extras for travel or guests, so keep a few that are in good condition. Make sure to label them so you know what they go to. And don't forget that chargers are relatively inexpensive, so they are easy to replace if they get worn out.

1. Clothes

Ever stand in your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear? And then end up wearing the same thing all the time? Yeah, me too. It can be a big project to go through all your clothes and purge so I have a little rule that I gave myself - if I try something on and I don't like it, or it doesn't fit, or has a stain, etc., then I can't hang it back up in my closet. It goes straight to my donate bin. This helps me keep from having that "nothing to wear" feeling, and reminds me what I need to replace.

Each of the categories doesn't have to be a huge project, if you just eliminate one thing you have made progress!
