Client Story: Making a Home Safe and Welcoming
When Bob first reached out to Sarasota Home Organizer, his message was clear—and urgent:
“My partner is in the hospital and she’s going to be coming home in probably about 10 days. We just moved into this house and it’s a cluttered mess. I need to make it safe for her as soon as you can.”
Bob and his partner Sarah had recently moved into their new home when life took a turn. Sarah, recovering from a serious fall and a brain bleed, was preparing to come home from the hospital. Their home, still in the chaos of unpacking, needed to be transformed into a safe and welcoming space—quickly.
Starting in the Garage
Jordan’s height comes in handy!
We began where the clutter was most urgent—the garage. Safety was the top priority, so we started by categorizing items and clearing wall space to prevent trip hazards. We took Bob to Lowe’s, purchased shelving units, assembled them, and began organizing items onto the new shelves. Seasonal decorations were stored on high shelves, and we secured rolled-up rugs to eliminate tripping risks.
Unfortunately, we also discovered multiple boxes of food—some were moldy and long expired. Those were promptly discarded, and all empty boxes were broken down and brought to the recycling center. By the end of the day, the garage had a clear system!
Unpacking the Heart of the Home
With Sarah’s return drawing closer, we shifted indoors. The kitchen counter and dining room table were cleared. Dishes filled the upper cabinets quickly, so overflow items were stored neatly on labeled shelves in the garage. We rearranged the living room furniture for both comfort and mobility, moved a large white couch into the garage, and unwrapped a beautiful grandfather clock.
Art pieces were carefully lined along the dining room wall, cushioned with towels to protect the frames. In the pantry, we tracked down the source of a strong odor—spoiled potatoes—which we quickly removed. In the master bedroom, we added shades to the lamps and placed them on each nightstand to prepare the space for Sarah’s rest and recovery.
Out on the lanai, we encountered an unexpected guest—a corn snake hiding beneath the boxes! Once the area was safe, we grouped unopened boxes by category and began the sorting process.
Prioritizing Safety
Bob expressed concern about their master bedroom closet, where items scattered across the floor created a major safety hazard. We focused our attention there, clearing and organizing the space so it was both functional and hazard-free.
On our final day, we tackled the third bedroom—previously filled wall-to-wall with unpacked boxes. We got everything sorted, stored, and organized.

It wasn’t perfectly decorated, the pictures were not hung yet, but it was safe and comfortable!
